SWG Remastered

About the server

About

Bringing Star Wars Galaxies back, rebuilt on a modern 64-bit core.

What this is

Star Wars Galaxies closed in 2011. SWG Remastered is a private server that kept running. Same game -- combat professions, crafting, player cities, space -- on a 64-bit server so it's not hitting the same walls the original did.

We're building out the quest content, fixing the balance, and adding to it as we go. Traders supply the economy. Entertainers restore battle fatigue. The sandbox still works the way it did.

The launcher keeps your client current. You don't have to patch anything manually.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What is SWG Remastered?

It is a Star Wars Galaxies private server built on the NGE-era engine: combat professions, crafting, player cities, and space, with a custom ruleset on top. The goal is a server that stays online, gets updated, and does not try to be a museum piece of any specific retail patch.

Can you still play Star Wars Galaxies in 2026?

Yes. The original servers closed in 2011, but the game lives on through community servers like this one. You bring an original Star Wars Galaxies client for the base assets, the launcher patches it to our build, and you are into the full sandbox: professions, player cities, and space.

Is this free to play?

Yes. The server is free. You only need an original Star Wars Galaxies game client to supply the base assets.

How do accounts work?

You make an account at the game's own sign-in screen the first time you run the client. It is a local login for this server, no separate website registration needed.

Is there a forum?

No. Announcements, support, and patch notes are posted in our community channels.

Can I play on macOS?

The launcher targets Windows first. Mac players can use Crosswire. A native macOS launcher build is planned.

What happened to Star Wars Galaxies?

Star Wars Galaxies launched in June 2003 and ran until December 15, 2011, when Sony Online Entertainment shut the servers down following the launch of Star Wars: The Old Republic. The SWG community has kept the game alive through emulators and private servers ever since. SWG Remastered is one of those servers.

How is SWG Remastered different from SWGEmu?

SWGEmu is a reverse-engineered emulator built from scratch to recreate the pre-Combat Upgrade era of retail SWG as accurately as possible. SWG Remastered is built on the SWG-Source codebase and is not a recreation project: it runs a custom ruleset on the NGE-era engine, rebuilt for 64-bit, and gets its own patches and content. Different goals, different codebases.

Is this a 64-bit server?

Yes. SWG Remastered runs on a 64-bit server core built from the SWG-Source codebase. The original retail servers were 32-bit, which capped addressable memory and limited how large the galaxy could grow. The 64-bit build removes that ceiling.

How do I get the Star Wars Galaxies game client?

SWG was never sold on Steam and is no longer in print. Original copies circulate on eBay, secondhand game sites, and game preservation archives. You need the base game client installed before the SWG Remastered launcher can patch it. The launcher itself is free; we do not distribute the original game files.
